It’s hard to say just how many guinea pigs are sold each year. The truth is that it is impossible to keep track of all those that are sold. Guineas are sold everywhere, from the petsitter down to the supermarket or farm sales. Many people have become involved in Guinea pigs as a hobby and there are many clubs and people who breed and raise them.

In 1855, shortly after World War I, anthropologist Sir Richard Breasted visited Africa and took some African black bears with him. He named them “monkeys” due to their habit of burying their feces in burrows they construct for themselves. A German surgeon, Reinhart Kulin, was the first to free these animals from their cruel captivity. He placed the bears in sow cages and sent them off to England. When Kulin brought them back, they were so affectionate that they spent a considerable amount of time in his home.

In 18 72, French geographer, Boule, noted in his journal that there were no guinea pigs in Africa. Instead, there were Cavianas. He wrote that there were two types of these animals, the wild Cavianas and the domestic ones that were domestic in appearance. The first set of domesticated guinea pigs came from France. Over the years there have been other visitors to Africa, bringing with them their own breeds of guinea pigs.

In recent years, American ornithologists, Paul Bert and Beverly Rachael Mason, have bred different breeds of the cavia and have produced crosses between them that are known as ‘moleculo fausci’. These have been used as starters for re-breeding the wild cavia to produce more popular breeds. So far, these have produced some good quality baby waves, which are now being offered at low cost to collectors and breeders. There have even been attempts to breed cavia pigs with Asian cavia to create a new type of domestic cavia, but these projects remain a long way off.

It was not until the nineteen seventies that an American breeder in Chicago started crossing Asian poleis with the cavia. At first these were called poleis molis, which was confusing for many American breeders, who did not know what the difference between poleis and molis was. Over the next few years different varieties of molecules were crossed with poleis molis, resulting in even tinier varieties. Today, these guinea pigs are recognized by the USDA as the ‘domestic guinea pig’ and are sold as such.

One variety of guinea pigs that has become very popular in the US is the black-eyed variety. This is a very pretty black and tan variety that is very attractive to the eye, even though it is actually blind. The black-eyed guinea pigs are also quite easy to care for, making them great pets. Breeders in south America are also breeding black-eyed pigs with domesticated poles, resulting in some amazing black-eyed baby guinea pigs.
